Looks To “Dye” For

Spring has sprung and it’s brought with it…colour! But why wear one colour when you can wear all the colours? Tie-dye prints are totally trendy and a great way to enhance your wardrobe and take your basics up a notch. We’ve put together some tips and tricks on how to style your new pieces, and even create them yourself.

LOOK FOR LITTLE ACCENTS

If you’re not ready to jump into large, bright pieces, add pops of colour with tie-dye accents like socks from hats from Boathouse, socks from Blackwell Supply Co., masks and scrunchies from H&M, or headbands from Claire’s. Small accessories can enhance your look without dominating your outfit. It’s an easy, fun way to try out a trend without a big commitment.

CHOOSE A COLOUR PALETTE THAT SUITS YOU

While tie-dye is known for being bright and rainbow-centric masterpieces, there are softer colours, neutrals, and even black and white tie-dye creations too, to suit any style.

Indulge in pretty tie-dye dresses from Aldila Boutique or a trendy long sleeve tee from Boathouse. And the little ones can’t go wrong with tye-die overalls and dresses from H&M and The Children’s Place.

HAVE A DIY DYE PARTY!

Turn a plain old tee or tank into a refreshed and funky piece with a take-home tie-dye kit. While most kits include the full-colour rainbow, creating your own pieces means you can pick and choose to get the exact colour blend you want. Check out Pinterest and YouTube for cool tips and tricks on how to tie up your shirt to create different designs and trippy patterns. And get yourself an awesome tie-dye kit from Gastronomer featuring Coles and The Children’s Place!

No matter how you choose to tackle tie-dye trends, the key is to have fun and enjoy your new fashions. And don’t forget to check out our Spring Lookbook for more fashion inspiration!

Pick The Right Diamond, Ladies

Diamonds aren’t an everyday purchase. In fact, for many, they’re a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. Our crash course on diamond certification will help you understand the different types and ensure you find exactly what you’re looking for. In fact, our team at Golden Tree Jewellers has got it down to a science.

How are diamonds ranked?

Well you C…no, literally, when it comes to diamonds you want to remember the four Cs: carat weight, clarity, colour grade, and cut. Together, these factors create a universal description of how a diamond will be valued.

One of the more common questions people ask when it comes to diamonds is how many carats? This is a measure of what the stone itself weighs. Depending on the style of jewelry you’re looking for you may also see terms like, “total carat weight” which is the total weight of all the stones together.

The next factor is clarity. In essence, clarity looks for imperfections in a diamond and ranks them on a numerical scale from flawless to, well, less than perfect. The clarity of the diamond reflects how much of that all-important sparkle you can expect.

Did you know not all diamonds are clear? That’s right. While they’re commonly colourless, they can have a tint all the way up to yellow colouring. Colours of diamonds are certified by a number (from 0.0-10) or a letter from D to Z.

The cut of a diamond can also play a vital role in how the stone is rated and how it shines. The cut is typically rated on a scale from ideal to poor. Other factors to consider when talking about diamonds are fluorescence, polish grade, and brilliance. Want to know more? Talk to a jeweller!

Who rates diamonds?

Certain professional organizations are known to be trusted authorities when it comes to diamond certifications. These include the Gemological Institute of America, The American Gem Society, The International Gemological Institute, Gemological Science International, and GemEx Systems Inc. A rating from any of these institutions is a good sign and indicates you’re dealing with a genuine product.

Shop And Ship

Send your love and a little gift this holiday season.

We’ve all been there: you find the perfect gift but there’s just no way it will arrive without breaking. Or worse, the cost to ship your gift to loved ones is more than the gift costs in the first place. With holiday parties and social get-togethers on the naughty list, this year more than ever before we’re relying on the mail to arrive in time, and in one piece. So how do you get a great gift that can survive the postal system? We’ve put together five great gifts that are easy to ship and we’re sure your recipient will love.

  • Make a statement with a new mask
We don’t always appreciate the practical gifts until we truly need them but there’s no denying a new mask is a gift you know will be put to good use. With so many options available at Hudson’s Bay, Below The Belt, Blackwell Supply Co. and so many stores, there is truly a design or pattern for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Plus, masks are small and lightweight making them an easy choice to ship to your loved ones—no matter how near or far they may be.
  • Warm those toes and fingers
Unless you’re really, really hot-blooded, or your gift recipient is south of the border, you’re probably starting to bundle up for the winter. And face it, who likes cold toes or numb fingers? The answer is no one. Cozy holiday socks or a chic pair of gloves are a great gift that your loved ones can put to good use instantly. Score some festive patterns or stick with neutrals that go with everything. These comfy classics from Nordstrom Rack won’t break in the mailroom and they won’t cost an arm (or a foot) to send.
  • Organize
Have a person on your list that’s always losing something? Gift them a cute makeup bag from Sephora, jewellery organizer, or pencil case from Coles to keep their essentials together in one place. If you’re feeling extra generous send along with a cute lip balm, stylish bracelet, or fancy pen and pencil set to go with.
  • Don’t forget the card
When in doubt, get the gift you know will be the right size, right colour, and will arrive in one piece—a gift card. In addition to taking the guesswork, and stress, out of gift-giving, a gift card lets your recipient get just what they want. Our Willowbrook gift cards are available in denominations from $10-$500 and they’re accepted by 130 great stores at Willowbrook.

However you’re celebrating, and whoever you’re celebrating with, be kind, be calm, be safe. And don’t forget to check the mail.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside—But You Don’t Have To Be

Okay, we know, the wet and grey drizzly Vancouver weather paired with the fact that it’s dark at lunchtime can make the winter months tough. But with the right pair of shoes (and boots and a sweater and a jacket) you’ll be far more comfortable and still stylish as ever.

Start from the ground up. Cold feet are the worst. Not only is it time to bust out thick, plush, fuzzy socks, it’s also time to look for boots and make sure your footwear can withstand rain and the occasional puddle. Stick with black or dark brown to ensure maximum options. Available at Blackwell Supply Co. and SoftMoc.

Those cute ripped jeans you were wearing a month ago? Time to put them back in the drawer and get pants that won’t leave you vulnerable to frostbite. Look for bootcut or skinny jeans at Below The Belt or Jack & Jones to easily tuck into your favourite boots and pair with a soft and warm sweater.

We don’t blame you if you’d rather not put your jeans on right now, either. And that’s why leggings and sweatpants exist! At Warehouse One, you can look for lined leggings that will not only keep you extra warm but are thicker to prevent any dreaded see-through spots. Or try joggers—a more tailored sweatpants alternative—to look athletic and comfortable, rather than traditional oversized sweats.

There’s no alternative to a proper rain jacket if you live in the Lower Mainland and now is the time to dust it off or invest in an upgrade. A warm, sleek, comfortable rain jacket from Little Mountain Vancouver and the winter coat from Nordstrom Rack is a must-have for anyone and makes popping out to run errands or take a quick walk that much more enjoyable. Besides, who really likes carrying a dripping umbrella with them all the time anyway?

Be sure to layer up under your jacket. Nothing screams winter wear like layers—the softer and snugglier the better. Look for zip-ups and buttons instead of over-the-head hoodies so that you can easily undo your layers if necessary before you overheat. Available at Little Mountain Vancouver and Nordstrom Rack.

As much as we’re all for staying home right now when the time comes to go out, be sure to stay warm, stay dry, stay stylish, and stay six feet away from other people.

Prepping For A Perfect Pout

Lipstick, liners, glosses—oh my! Nothing screams fall fashion and makeup like a dark, rich, vampy lip colour or a warm and sophisticated brown. To make your pout look (and feel!) it’s best we’ve put together a few quick tips and tricks that’ll have you styling and smiling in no time.

Don’t skip the prep work

Before you jump into beautiful bold colours, prep your lips for products. Use a lip scrub from Hudson’s Bay before you apply colour to buff away any dry flaky skin and ensure your lips are soft and supple. Did we mention lip scrubs are sugar-based and taste as good as they smell? Don’t have a lip scrub? Running your toothbrush over your lips can also work in a pinch.

Line up

There are multiple benefits to using a lip liner like this one at Hudson’s Bay in combination with your other products. Liners help you define (or redefine) the shape of your pout and create a guideline for filling in your lips with lipstick and reducing the risk of your lip colour bleeding beyond the edge of your defined lip line. Choose a liner as close to your lipstick as possible for a seamless blend, or, choose a shade or two darker to create a shadow and make your lips look fuller. You can also choose a liner pencil like those available at Sephora that you sharpen for a precise fine point, or a twistable crayon that’s quick and convenient on the go.

Variety is the spice of life, and makeup

Lip products come in a wide range of colours and formulas and the best way to decide what you like is to try them out. Have a tried and true colour you love? Switch it up with a different finish. Many lipsticks are available in matte, satin, and frosted options at Sephora and Hudson’s Bay. Torn between two different colours? Travel-sized minis are a great way to try more than one colour without having to pay for a full-sized product. Or treat yourself to a gift set! Did we mention holiday sets are hitting the shelves right now?

Balms away

Who likes chapped lips? Not us. And prevention is key! Whether you’re rocking reds or perfecting pinks take care of your pout with a hydrating lip balm or overnight lip mask, like the one below from Hudson’s Bay. And while it can be tempting to pick a lip balm based on cute packaging or how great it smells, try reaching for one that’s unscented and consider one with oil or butter in it—not just wax—to penetrate the surface of your lips.

No matter what your go-to look, brand, or product is, we know one thing for sure—a smile goes with everything, and it never goes out of style.

Time To Trade

Feel that? It’s the seasons changing. With fall just around the corner, we’ve rounded up our top trades that are cozy, comfy and anything but basic.

Trade your flip flops for boots

They say with the right pair of shoes you can change the world. We bet they were boots, especially Aldo boots! Whether they’re ankle boots or knee-high, boots are a fall classic that keeps your feet dry and covered and works with almost any outfit. Plus, no one knows if you’re overdue for a pedicure. Not a boot fan? Go for a new pair of flats from Call It Spring. Stick with classic black or step into a sleek animal print pair instead (faux and friendly, of course).

Trade your shorts for new denim

While you’re packing away your flip flops, you might want to trade your shorts for a new pair of jeans, too. Mix it up with a new wash or different cut to easily change your look and revamp your style. Look for a pair that’s snug in the hip and thigh—they’ll stretch—and follow the washing directions to keep your new jeans looking their best as long as possible. Available at Bootlegger.

Trade your tank tops for sweaters

Okay so tank tops always have a place in your wardrobe, but, as the temperature starts to dip, consider layering them under a flannel shirt or knit sweater from H&M. Button up to stay super cozy or wear your sweaters open for a look that’s effortlessly casual.

Trade your hoodies for a structured jacket or blazer

The fall is a great time to invest in a new sport coat or blazer and is an easy way to turn your jeans and tee combo into a modern business-casual outfit so you’re ready for your next Zoom call in a snap. Blazers and jackets from Ricki’s can also add a splash of colour to brighten up your look and stay fresh even when the weather takes a toll for the worse.

Trade your lipstick for a new mask

Keep yourself safe and cut down on your makeup routine with a new mask from Call It Spring. Skip the lipstick and reach for sequins or a patterned reusable fabric mask instead and keep it handy for easy wear while you’re out and about.

No matter how you choose to refresh your wardrobe, we know you’ll snag pieces to fall for.

Just Keep Swimming…In Cute Swimwear

How do you get a bikini body? Easy—put a bikini on your body! With the last few days of sunshine in the forecast over the coming weeks, who doesn’t want to be poolside or lounging by the lake in your favourite swimwear? So we’ve compiled some tips to keep you and your swimsuit looking the very best.

RINSE

A quick rinse when you take your swimsuit off will not only remove harsh pool chemicals like chlorine, or salt from the ocean but will also get rid of any sunscreen or tanning oils you have applied that can cause your bright bold prints to fade faster. Pssst…these swimsuits are from Boathouse and Swimco!

HAND WASH

Avoid the temptation to throw your bathing suit in the washing machine. Even a delicate cycle is too harsh for your cute suit and laundry detergent is a no-go. Wash your stuff by hand in the sink with mild hand soap or invest in a swimwear wash to keep your pieces clean, bright, and fitting right. And we mentioned a good rinse, right? Try something like this swimwear cleaner from Swimco.

ROTATE

You heard us! One of the best ways to keep your suits looking their best is to have a collection you can rotate through. Swimwear is commonly made from spandex and needs time to return to its original shape after wear. If you’re heading out for a weekend on the water, change suits daily to keep them all in tip-top shape—and to show off more of your wardrobe. Be sure to check out Swimco, H&M, and Boathouse to add to your collection!

ACCESSORIZE

Don’t forget a cute coverup! Coverups are a light, quick, and easy way to help protect yourself from the sun, but remember—they do not replace sunblock. Complete your ensemble with chic shades from Aldo or Sunglass Hut to protect your eyes and a cute tote for your essentials.

Take care of your body, and your bikini, and get ready to make a splash.
