Tips for Tots This Halloween

Boo! Scared you, didn’t we? With Halloween right around the corner, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks on how to have a fun time with your little ones and create a killer costume quickly.

  • Choose something comfy and practical from Urban Kids
    The odds of a warm and sunny Halloween in Metro Vancouver are more of a trick than a treat. When planning what to dress up as, be sure to factor in the ability to be warm and dry. Consider a costume that can be worn over warmer clothes or choose something that already includes layers or outwear as part of the look.
  • Opt for face paint from Coles over masks
    We’ve spent plenty of time wearing masks recently, but full-face coverings and masks can pose safety risks for little ones. In addition to being hot and sweaty, Halloween masks can make it hard to breathe and see well, especially at night. Avoid the risk of a trip or fall and use face paint instead! Face paints are a great addition to costumes and lets everyone embrace their inner artist. Plus, they wash right off at the end of the night.
  • Use clothing you can easily re-purpose
    Cute, ready-to-go costumes are all over and make for a quick solution to dressing up. But when Halloween is over, what do you do with them? Instead, try using clothing you can re-purpose after Halloween like colourful tees and leggings and add accessories and props to polish off your look.

  • You don’t have to trick-or-treat
    While hitting the neighbourhood and collecting candy is the Halloween tradition, it’s not always as fun as it sounds for the kiddos, especially if it’s cold and rainy. Sore feet? Climbing stairs? Uncomfortable costumes? No thank you. Consider fun family alternatives like visiting a local pumpkin patch or haunted house. Many venues offer a milder, less scary version of their haunted house during the day, perfect for anyone who isn’t into scary thrills. Or spend Halloween with us at Willowbrook! We’re hosting The Great Pumpkin Haunt—a fun scavenger hunt throughout the mall’s common areas, complete with awesome prizes.

On November 20th, we’ll be stepping back in time to the opulent 1920’s. Glitz, glamour and high society amidst rivers of champagne and classic jazz. Don’t miss out on an evening to remember! This year’s event will help support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley. Their preventative mentoring programs support over 400 children and youth in our community who are facing adversity, by providing them with another caring and trusting adult in their lives.

Not only is this event a fun way to kick-start your holiday shopping, but the event will ignite the potential of young people through the power of mentoring.

Full of Thanks and Turkey, Too!

Family time, turkey, and too much food—it’s what makes Thanksgiving so great, but also, so much work. But if you’re taking on the hosting role this year, don’t stress. We’ve put together a few simple suggestions to make your celebration as easy (and delicious) as possible.

Step one: pick a new recipe

Thanksgiving is full of traditions, including the menu: turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, Brussels sprouts, and of course, pumpkin pie. But there’s nothing that says you can’t bust out your cookbooks from Coles or open up Pinterest and try a new recipe. Consider lightening up the menu with a delicious roast veggie side dish or look for recipes that use fresh herbs and seasonings for a burst of flavour.

Step two: set the table

Gone are the days of massive centrepieces and displays of pumpkins and squash. Instead, create a chic, modern, timeless arrangement with candles and simple floral accents from The Bay and swap grandma’s lace tablecloth for a patterned table runner and matching placemats.

Step three: carve the turkey

The centre of Thanksgiving dinner is always the bird. Whether you’re cooking a giant turkey, a simple chicken, or a vegetarian alternative, you’ll want to make sure you serve it in style. Grab a new roaster or upgrade your pots and pans with a new set from Hudson’s Bay before the big day. Not only will it make prepping and cooking easier, but new cookware cleans up easily, too.

Step four: put your comfy clothes on

After all that deliciousness we won’t blame you if you want to put your sweats on and hit the couch. But there’s nothing that says your comfy clothes can’t be cute! Slip into soft and stretchy joggers from Plenty and an oversized sweater from H&M and give extra thanks for loungewear this year.

How do you entertain the whole family without leaving the house? With games, of course! Whether your family is big or small, full of tiny tots or too cool teens, the right game is sure to entertain everyone.

Don’t forget games for the digital age. Yes, even video games can be a great family activity and a fun way to spend time together. Test your driving skills as you race with Mario and the gang, unlock the legend of Zelda, and break out all your best dance moves with Just Dance! Pop by EB Games to find all these and more. Just remember to charge your controllers beforehand and save your top score to see who remains undefeated.

If you’re up for a creative challenge then clear the table, make some room, and start building! Puzzles have seen a huge boost in popularity, and we can see why. It’s both a relaxing and challenging way to pass the time, and there’s no better feeling than popping the last piece into place. If you’re up for an extra challenge, try a 3D puzzle from Coles or Sunrise Records instead for a finished display piece you’ll want to marvel at for weeks.
