Make It Fun

How do you entertain the whole family without leaving the house? With games, of course! Whether your family is big or small, full of tiny tots or too cool teens, the right game is sure to entertain everyone.

Feeling lucky? Games of chance are a fun way to kick-off your game night and test your luck. Card games are great for this and typically don’t need a ton of table space and can be set up quickly. But make sure you’re playing with a full deck. Count through the cards before you start, or better yet, invest in a new deck from Spencer’s. No one likes a cheater.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Classic party games like Monopoly, Clue, and Operation, can have your family working together to solve crimes—it was Colonel Mustard with the candlestick, right?—and test your steady hand as you fix your patient’s charley horse. Pull all your faves down off the shelf or see what’s new in-store at Toys R Us and look for a fresh twist on all the retro classics.

Don’t forget games for the digital age. Yes, even video games can be a great family activity and a fun way to spend time together. Test your driving skills as you race with Mario and the gang, unlock the legend of Zelda, and break out all your best dance moves with Just Dance! Pop by EB Games to find all these and more. Just remember to charge your controllers beforehand and save your top score to see who remains undefeated.

If you’re up for a creative challenge then clear the table, make some room, and start building! Puzzles have seen a huge boost in popularity, and we can see why. It’s both a relaxing and challenging way to pass the time, and there’s no better feeling than popping the last piece into place. If you’re up for an extra challenge, try a 3D puzzle from Coles or Sunrise Records instead for a finished display piece you’ll want to marvel at for weeks.

Having fun can work up an appetite so don’t forget the snacks. With dozens of restaurants at Willowbrook, it’s easy to order takeout to top off your fun night at home. Or, try out Gastronomer—our food concierge service that provides you (and your hungry family) with a curated collection of tasty treats and yummy eats. Whether pizza is calling your name, you’re craving a fresh stir fry, or you need something sweet, we’ve got you, and your family, covered.

Make Yourself At Home

Let’s be honest: camping isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. Flimsy tents, bug bites, and all that packing and unpacking. No thank you. But it’s not all bad. S’mores, anyone? Bring the best of camping indoors with some cute décor and enjoy a quiet camp out without the hassle.

Building a campfire isn’t easy. But using a s’mores machine is. Pick yours up from Hudson’s Bay and slow roast your marshmallow to perfection without the hassle of chopping wood so you can enjoy everyone’s favourite camping dessert at home indoors.

Pitching a tent? Pass. Putting together a cute pop-up tent for your little one? Sold. Set up your own private campsite in the playroom, family room, or wherever you feel like camping out comfortably. And as an added bonus, you don’t have to worry about being trapped with a buzzing critter all night. Find affordable and cute options for your little loves at Toys R Us.

Stargazing? Okay, we admit, that’s a pretty great part of camping that we can’t replicate. But in the meantime, we’ll settle for stargazing entertainment at home. Just dim the lights and let unicorns entertain you with a cool handheld projector from Mountain Warehouse. Besides, when was the last time you saw a unicorn when you were camping? Or put your crafting skills to the test and fold your own origami lanterns—a cute camping activity that lets you decorate, too—with a do-it-yourself kit from Toys R Us.

Whether the great outdoors is calling your name or you’re a diehard fan being indoors, we’re sure you can make yourself at home and have fun with the family camping in style, and comfort.

Make It Cozy

We know, we know, Summer left us too soon. But, as the weather changes, the air gets crisp, and the Fall season makes its debut, it’s time for comfy clothes, cozy spaces, all things pumpkin, and deep relaxation. Make your space, and wardrobe Autumn ready in just a few simple steps.

MAKE IT LOOK COZY

Bring on the blankets and cute throw pillows from QE Home. Beyond making your space look more inviting, a few little luxuries will also make it feel more comfortable and much warmer. Consider a few easy-to-style table accents like fake Fall floral arrangements in a simple vase or serving bowl from Hudson’s Bay or use mini pumpkins and seasonal squash to make a festive display. And when the sun starts setting earlier fear not—string up adorable fairy lights from Coles around your window, over a bookshelf, or display them along with another table décor for a twinkly dining experience.

MAKE IT FEEL COZY

If denim isn’t your thing, slip into stretchy, fuzzy, comfy loungewear and put your feet up, it’s sweater weather! And whether you’re all about chunky cable knits, thick oversized hoodies, or matching sweatsuits, we’re sure you’ll find your fall faves at American Eagle Outfitters and we won’t blame you if you refuse to change out of them. Cold feet? Slip into plush fuzzy socks or invest in a nice pair of slippers from Soft Moc that will leave you feeling like you’re walking on air.

MAKE IT SMELL COZY

Apples and cinnamon? Pumpkin pie? Vanilla? How do we choose?! Whatever sweet smell speaks to you, there’s a candle for that, especially at Bath & Body Works. Adding to the cozy vibes with a sweet aroma can make home feel and of course smell that much better. But if candles aren’t your thing, or there are little ones or furry friends who might accidentally get too close, try a scented reed diffuser or a room spray as a fire-free alternative.

With a few little luxuries your home will be fabulous, Fall ready, and a place you won’t want to leave.

Make Memories

We’re all guilty of taking a ton of photos on our phones and then doing nothing with them. A few lucky ones might end up on social media, but what happens to the rest? Instead of deleting them to make space or backing them up on a cloud, we want to share a few fun and inspirational ways to showcase your life’s biggest moments… think Instagram, just a hard copy.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then it stands to reason that a scrapbook is worth millions.

Scrapbooking is a sweet way to capture your memories and special moments. Whether it’s a new baby, an exotic vacation, or just a trip down memory lane, preserving your photos and other mementos (like tickets and brochures) is a fun and personal project you can relive over and over. Experiment with funky layouts, cool collages, and unique embellishments but be sure to use acid-free paper, glue, and photo stickers from Coles to avoid discolouration and keep your pics pristine.

Scrapbooks also make a heartfelt, one-of-a-kind gift that you know will never be exchanged for store credit. But if the idea of undertaking an art project seems daunting, we have two words for you: custom gift. Skip the DIY crafts and leave them to the pros who can turn your favourite photo into a personalized keepsake.

Did you know, Willowbrook Art Gallery offers canvas transfers? It’s where your photo is stretched over a wooden bar and is turned into a work of art, ready to hang! Makes quite a memorable gift, doesn’t it?

You can also get custom t-shirts, hoodies and more made at The Dog’s Ear to mark family milestones. Everyone loves a “World’s Best Mom” shirt! And that’s not all, you can head into The Source to find digital photo frames, a perfect gift for grandparents, where you can add a slideshow of several memories and watch it do its magic.

Don’t forget to head into Kerrisdale Cameras to buy your very own camera. Be it an expensive, professional DSLR, or a fun Instax Mini camera, the memories will still be precious when you look back at them. You can get your photos developed at Kerrisdale Cameras or Foto Stop. The choice is yours.

Celebrate your milestone moments, fun family times, and little laughs every day. And remember, make it memorable.

Make It Sweet

HOW SWEET IT IS…

Sweet. Sweeter. Sweetest. Whatever your level of sweet tooth or how much sugar you need to get your fix, we’ve got you covered.

Sweetest

For the super sweet tooth, why not build a candy sampler or sugar-fuelled charcuterie for an easy and oh-so-yummy dessert? Cover the basic candy food groups—gummy and sour—with a stop at Sweet Factory and pop into Purdys Chocolatier for your chocolate fix. Share with a special someone, or enjoy on your own (don’t worry, we won’t tell).

Sweeter

If the idea of a serving platter of candy and chocolate makes you want to eat some fresh fruit and call your dentist, then maybe baking a sweet blueberry orange marmalade muffin is more your vibe. Made with zesty gourmet marmalade this recipe is *chef’s kiss*.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup milk + 2 tablespoons
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 4 tablespoons orange liqueur
  • 2 cups pastry flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup blueberry orange marmalade from Murchie’s Tea & Coffee

How to make it:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a muffin tin with paper liners
  • In a large bowl mix the oil, sugar, eggs, orange zest and liqueur
  • Add in the flour, baking soda, baking powder and combine
  • Spoon two tablespoons of the batter into each muffin
  • Place a teaspoon of marmalade into each and then top with batter making sure there is enough batter to cover the marmalade. Be sure not to overfill the muffins or they may spill over the edge when baking.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the tops of the muffins start to crack.
  • Enjoy with coffee, tea, milk, and warm butter, or more marmalade!

Sweet

If your sweet tooth is missing, fear not. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy chocolate in savoury dishes, too, but we think it’s hard to go wrong with a chocolate and beer BBQ sauce that goes great with ribs, chicken, brisket, or whatever’s on the grill.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup pale ale
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup chopped dark chocolate from Purdys Chocolatier

How to make it:

  • In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, combine olive oil and crushed garlic and cook until garlic becomes fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  • Whisk in the remaining ingredients except for the chocolate.
  • Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.
  • Add chocolate and stir until completely melted.
  • Enjoy with assorted BBQ meats or use as a dip on the side.

Whatever your tastebuds prefer, enjoy your sweet (and savoury) treats and remember—save room for dessert!
